Materials and Process Project; Titled: Branch
My process was the exploration of making a non-natural material, rope, look as natural as possible. To do this, I incorporated a stick and some wire to give the rope a branch-like figure. I only arrived at this idea after originally wanting to experiment with how different knots would give the rope figure and adding wire for structure. However, I then got the idea to incorporate something natural to work off of. I strategically wove the rope in varying thicknesses around the stick to make it look as organic as possible, then added wire for smaller branches. I enjoyed working with rope, it was a medium I hadn’t really worked with before, and I really appreciated how many different ways you can manipulate it to give it different contexts. Especially with the incorporation of the wire, the possibilities of configurations are endless. In the end, I am satisfied with the way the sculpture turned out. The piece appears to be reaching and sprawling out very naturally with the loose strings hanging and flowing organically. It is the type of sculpture that has a simple concept yet the process can be appreciated when closely examining the branch. The piece can be interpreted however the viewer reads it, my only intention was to make viewers question the line between natural and unnatural in the way how humans manipulate nature.
